The Culture Collection of Microorganisms – producers of antibiotics of Ivan Franko Lviv National Univercity was founded at the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology (Biological Faculty) in 1995. The main aim of the Collection is conservation and investigation of microorganisms’ strains, mainly actinomycetes-producers of antibiotics and other biologically active substances.

The collection is the part of National Registry of scientific objects that constitute national property of Ukraine (Decree of the Cabinet of Ministry of Ukraine from August 19, 2002, N 472-p)

Current state

The Collection includes nearly 700 units of conservation and regularly replenished. It consists of typical actinomycete strains – producers of antibiotics (beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides, tetracyclines, anthracyclines, angucyclines, polyene antibiotics, thiopeptides) with antibacterial, antitumor, antiparasitical and fungicidal activities.

The Collection includes strains with altered antibiotics synthesis and resistance for them, auxotrophs, strains which carry DNA molecules with cloned antibiotic biosynthesis and antibiotic resistance genes. The collection contains strains of Escherichia coli, which carry vector’s and recombinant’s DNA molecules of different origin that are used to construct the producers of new antibiotics and enzymes. Actinomycetes strains which are perspective for development of antibiotics biotechnology in Ukraine are supporting in the Collection. Besides, the Collection includes phytopathogenic fungal and bacterial strains, which used for investigation of actinomycetes antagonistic properties.

The Collection is educational and methodical platform for laboratory students' activities on genetics, selection and genetic engineering of microorganisms and for diplomas and dissertation fulfillment.

The main direction of the Collection researches is studying diversity of soil actinomycetes from different Ukraine biotopes and investigation their properties in order to search producers of new bioactive compounds. Within the framework of this direction signed an agreement on scientific cooperation with the Helmholtz-Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (Germany), under which the project "Isolation and screening of Ukraine actinomycetes" is being executed. Nowadays 8 new biologically active compounds, among which are two previously undescribed structural classes of natural compounds have been discovered. These compounds are synthesized by actinomycetes of genus Streptomyces which were isolated from Crimean peninsula soils.

The laboratory NDL-42 headed by Prof. Fedorenko V.O. expresses siencere thanks to Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for thorough support of the Collection
